Post 3: Spell Book

Josiah Wilkinson

Firstly, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

And, I have a late Christmas present coming soon!

THE OPEN ROAM DEMO OF ECHOES OF LOTUS!!!!

(...ok, that's enough excitement)

So, I plan to release the first open roam demo of Echoes of Lotus early January. Now, this isn't really a proper demo, at least, not the one I'm planning to release a little later; the proper demo will basically play the game from the beginning and give an intro to the story and characters or the world, like any good demo should. This open roam demo is, well, pretty much what it sounds like it is; an open-world version of the game demonstrating the combat system and many of the spells in the final game. You'll be able to meet some of the other characters, but only a couple, and it will be devoid of later things that will be in the proper demo, such as full cutscenes, items, boss fights, and other things. This is really just a preview of a preview. I'll probably write more about it in my next post, so I should probably stop now so that I have something left to say. XD

Anyways, to the actual topic of this post, the titular spell book. Because the combat system relies on the player to make moves by casting spells by drawing super specific runes, I figured that, if there's more than 3 spells, it may be a tad hard to remember the exact rune, especially in the middle of a fight. So I made a spell book; a simple virtual manual in the game of all of your unlocked spells and discovered secret spells.

This manual will be accessible in the overworld as well as in the middle of a fight, where accessing it will pause the fight, and as a result, the timer for your move (so you can really just open the spell book if you need a second to think; I think I just made the planned timer redundant). For your convenience, the spell book sorts all of your spells however you wish, as long as you wish to sort them by type/element, tier, or attack value. When a spell (displayed as a rune) in the book is scrolled over, it gives the name and basic information of the spell. Clicking on it brings up a new page that displays all of the other information that would be needed to be known for it.

As simple and short as it is to describe, I put alot of thought and work into trying to design a spell book system that would feel accessible and be useful to the player; I suppose I'll see how it's received when the first demo comes out.

Well, that's all for now; see you all in 2 weeks when I talk more about the demo.

Thanks for your support!
